Lets Clean Up the Tweets Get rid of Twitter Spammers

What is Wrong With Twitter

Twitter spam is getting worse, I would say one tweet out of 3 you get someone who is following 3,000, has about 30 people following back and has 1 tweet with a website address, constantly sending the same message over and over again.

A few sites and tools have sprung up over the last few months to try and fight the spammers, one of the good ones The Twitter Blacklist recently closed having lost confidence in Twitter as a platform and failing to inforce it’s own TOS.

Anyhow here are a few sites and services that might help you out;

SocialToo is described as your companion to the social web, and integrates some other social networking platforms such as Facebook with more features on the way, for the moment though we will look at the Twitter set-up.

As you can see in the Twitter preferences you can auto follow people and also add names to a blacklist, which will then go onto a database so in future SocialToo might even be able to block spammers automatically.

Twitspam is a website service looking for spammers, if you suspect a spammy twitter follower send a tweet that has the twitter account name and include the hashtag #twitspam in the tweet, they will find them and add it to the directory.

Another handy site to visit for some hints and tips is Stop Twitter Spam, they have a anti-spam settings guide and a whole bunch of extra information.

If you find any more handy sites and tools for this kind of thing be sure to share them in the comments or in the birdhouse

  2. Great post.
    A tool I had used previously is Twerpscan - http://twerpscan.com/ - which helps identify those with funky follow:followers ratios, etc but Twitter has shut off their API access. Ev and Stone - if you are reading this - please turn it back on. The service will help reduce the spam. the blacklists are nice, but tools like this help you catch people quickly.

    Another suggestion for Twitter - when showing a profile, why not display the number of people who have blocked someone? If someone has been blocked 50 times, it’s a pretty clear sign they’re a spammer.
