drop.io petition Twitter for more security as they release tweet.io
drop.io, the simply and easy to use online storage service have today gone alpha on a new service called tweet.io which allows you to share your drop.io uploads with your twitter followers.
To get started you will need to subscribe your twitter account to updates from your drop.io drop by entering your twitter username and password… add items to your drop via any ‘input’, we convert it for you, we twitter a direct link for you. (any media –> drop.io –> twitter)
You can add just about anything to your drop – pictures, video, audio, documents, files, notes, links – via almost any drop.io input – web, widget, email/mms, voicemail, fax – the items will instantly be placed in your twitter feeds with direct links. Your twitter ‘followers’ can in one click experience any media type on the fly… So, you can directly leave voicemail right into twitter or even fax all your followers.
Also with the release of tweet.io they have also announced that they have sent an open letter to Twitter and have started a petition for them to create a secure authentication system. Here is the statement from drop.io with the links for both open letter, and petition.
A Very Important Note on PRIVACY and Twitter: At drop.io we believe in collecting and saving as little meta-data and user information as is possible both as a matter of privacy and simplicity. We don’t have accounts, we don’t ask for your name, etc. We all love twitter and are excited about the function we have built with their service, but their system forces us to store your twitter username and password (securely on our side) and transmit it to twitter in a non-secure way.
First, as a user please consider this before using the twitter/drop.io integration. Second, as a service we are uncomfortable with this situation, but there is no other way for us (or any other service that allows you to post tweets) to offer the functionality. Please read our open letter to twitter and consider supporting our official petition asking twitter to prioritize the creation of a secure authentication system. (please spread this if you believe in it)
The open letter sent to Twitter makes for an interesting read, and if you feel the same way as these guys then you need to put your name to the petition.

Thanks for calling out our petition. We are really psyched about our simple integration with twitter. We have been using it ourselves for a few days now and find it really interesting…
but we are really uncomfortable with the lack of secure auth system. if you agree and want to support our petition please take a look at http://tweet.io
best, sam
