Twitter drops SMS Support! tweetSMS picks up the ball

Posted on 15. Aug, 2008 by John in Latest News, Twitter, Twitter Apps

As the news came through yesterday that Twitter will be no longer delivering outbound SMS over it’s UK number due to large operator costs. A new service called by a web development company in the UK called tweetSMS was announced. Which will pick up the ball where Twitter left it.

As of Thursday 14th August 2008, Twitter is no longer sending out-going SMS customers to the thousands of international twitter users!

Sending out SMS messages to thousands of users international is a costly business, and Twitter has decided to cut its costs. If you do not live in the US, Canada or India, you will no longer receive updates via SMS!

tweetSMS is here to help bridge that gap. For a low price, tweetSMS can send you individual, hourly or daily updates from all of your friends!

The service currently in development will let you get the same service with a small charge (not yet known) although an ad supported free version is being talked about. Initial testing for the service will be based in the UK, over UK networks. However, they also plan to offer this service internationally, converting all elements of the site into local languages.

Construction is already underway, and they want to have a beta test open very shortly. If you would like to participate in testing tweetSMS, register your interest and they will get in touch.

If Twitter were bemoaning the costs of the sms service, wouldn’t it have been better for Twitter itself to do something like this and make sms a premium service?, they might have made a little bit of money at it as well.
