Tweetie: The new Twitter app for the iPhone [Preview]

Posted on 15. Nov, 2008 by John in Latest News, Twitter, iPhone Apps

Earlier on this week I got the opportunity to road test a new Twitter app for the iPhone/iPod touch. Tweetie was developed by a company called atebits and was submitted to the app store pending approval on the 11th of November so it should be out very soon, in the mean time I thought I would quickly run through some of services and features of Tweetie and some early thoughts.

Okay so first up is the feature list.

  • Handle multiple twitter accounts.
  • View your timeline, replies, direct messages and favorites.
  • Browse your friends and followers.
  • Post new tweets, retweet, reply directly to tweets and send direct messages.
  • Follow and unfollow people.
  • Mark tweets as favorites.
  • Navigate reply chains.
  • Inline web browser.
  • Post links with automatic link shrinking via bit.ly.
  • Upload pictures to twitpic.com.
  • Update your twitter location.
  • View twitter trends and perform custom searches.
  • Save your favorite searches.
  • Implements the full twitter API.
  • Uses secure connection (https).

The user interface for the application reminds me of the sms service already on the iPhone, with your Tweets in the right bubble and your friends on the left.

Clicking on a tweet will bring you to this tweet details page

And from here you can reply, add as a favorite and repost, if you click on the blue arrow next to the username that will then take you to user details

From here you can decide to stop following the user, find out that persons following/follower information, check up on recent tweets and search for people talking about the user.

Below are some more screenshots showing you the trends and searches functions as well as the favorite feature.

I’ve been playing around with this app for a few days now and I have to say in my opinion it’s one of the best out there for Twitter, I really did try to find fault with Tweetie and even though I had the developer build the application never crashed and was really fast to navigate through tweets and start new searches. Overall Tweetie is a great application that will be my preferred method for posting on the go from now on.

Tweetie will be available in the iTunes store soon and atebits have said that it will cost $2.99. For more information on the app and to find out when it will hit the store you can follow @atebits on Twitter. If you do buy the app come back here and let us know what you think and how you got on.

What separates this from the other free Twitter iphone apps?

For me, what separates it is additional functionality. Used a combo of Twitterific (attractive & easy to read) & Twittelator (search & nav capability) for a while. Then went to TwitterFon since it gave you most of the functionality of the other two combined & then when there were problems with TwitterFon, tried Tweetie.

Tweetie has most all TwitterFon functionality + the following:
    -Multi-account support
    -Retweet
    -See sent DMs
    -Favorites
    -Trending
    -Nav to followers/following

At first I wasn’t a fan of the UI as I thought it wasn’t space conscious but I’ve grown to like it. Also like little bonuses like the favorite icon & picture icon displayed in the top right corner when they are associated with that tweet.

I wish that more tweets would be displayed upon each refresh/load more but am ok with it.

I also like that it continues to load more & more past tweets where some other apps seem to impose limits.

Wow! Such an amazing amount of work went into this application. This is definitely for the serious Twitter user. It’s going to be a whole lot of competition for us with Juglir. We also attempted to create the bookmarklet but had some issues. Overall, great job for those serious Twitter users.
